Andamooka Black Matrix Opal is a unique and striking variety of opal found in Andamooka, South Australia. Physically, it is characterized by a porous host rock (matrix) that contains precious opal scattered throughout, creating a speckled or "galaxy-like" effect. Naturally light in color, the matrix is often treated—with sugar and acid or smoke—to darken the background and enhance the vivid flashes of green, blue, red, and orange that the opal produces. Despite the treatment, this is still considered a genuine opal and is valued for its beauty and affordability compared to solid black opals. Its hardness is around 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale.
Metaphysically, Andamooka Black Matrix Opal is believed to amplify emotional and spiritual energy, supporting intuition, creativity, and transformation. It is often used for grounding spiritual insights into everyday life, and its star-like appearance is thought to connect the user to cosmic energy or higher consciousness. Many also see it as a stone of protection and inspiration, especially during times of change.
